In 2018, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged a seller of the Myers cocktail with making misleading and unsupported claims that the drips treated diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, or diabetes. For a healthy body, a varied diet remains the primary and best-studied source of vitamins, and a drip is a medical tool, not a supplement taken preventively without indications.

So where does a drip genuinely help? The intravenous route has an advantage where the oral route fails: in cases of impaired intestinal absorption, after gastrointestinal surgery, during infections with dehydration, and in recovery after prolonged alcohol consumption. In those situations, the frequency of drips has a medical justification.

For most healthy people, vitamins in tablet form are sufficient, cheaper, and safer than a drip. Thiamine (B1) and prevention of Wernicke encephalopathy

This does not mean that higher doses always work better. A randomized study published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research (Dingwall et al., 2022) found no advantage of very high doses of thiamine over intermediate doses.
