Which blood tests are worth doing

Unfortunately, few people realize this, but regular blood tests are extremely important. Specialists recommend having preventive tests done at least once a year – even if you don't experience any worrying symptoms. Regular monitoring of your body allows you to detect threats in time and prevent serious diseases. So if you haven't yet added an annual blood test to your calendar, it's high time to make up for it! Find out why preventive tests are so important for maintaining proper body function and which blood tests are worth doing!

Complete blood count

Blood reflects what's happening in our body. A complete blood count is the basic test most commonly recommended by doctors. It serves to assess the number of platelets. In this case, both the number of red and white blood cells and their volume and shape are important. The blood count also determines the concentration of hemoglobin in erythrocytes. This test allows you to assess the patient's overall health condition and obtain basic information for diagnosing various diseases at an early stage. Thanks to the blood count, we can detect anemia, whether an inflammatory state is occurring in the body, as well as hematological disorders. These tests should be analyzed in the context of the patient's overall health condition.

ESR test

The ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) test is a basic test for detecting inflammatory conditions in the body. This test shows the rate at which red blood cells settle within an hour of blood collection. If the cell settling rate is too high, there is probably an inflammatory state in the body, which may indicate various diseases. Conversely, decreased ESR indicates sickle cell anemia, polycythemia, and decreased fibrinogen levels.

Lipid profile

A lipid profile is a test used to assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It allows you to determine the concentration of various types of fats. The assessment includes, among others: cholesterol concentration, triglyceride concentration, so-called good cholesterol and bad cholesterol indicators. The first lipid profile should be performed around the age of 20.

Glucose concentration

Measuring glucose levels allows you to detect abnormalities occurring in carbohydrate metabolism. This test is recommended for pregnant women as well as both healthy people and those suffering from diabetes. The test is performed on an empty stomach (it should be done at least 8 hours after the last meal).

Liver function tests

Tests referred to as liver function tests are preventive tests through which it is possible to assess liver function. They allow early diagnosis of hepatitis. Abnormalities in tests often appear earlier than any other symptoms indicating liver problems. The essence of the test is to determine the activity of specific liver enzymes.

TSH level test

Testing hormone levels allows you to detect thyroid problems even when no characteristic and worrying symptoms have appeared. This test is very sensitive and allows you to detect abnormalities not only in the initial phase of thyroid disease, but also in people in whom the disease is asymptomatic.

What preventive tests to perform on a child

A child, especially one who cannot yet speak, will not be able to specify what exactly hurts, what type of pain it is, and when or in what situations the ailments intensify. Therefore, preventive tests should be performed from the earliest age. This will also help establish good habits. In the case of the youngest, it is most often recommended to perform the so-called child profile, which consists of a series of different tests allowing for a detailed assessment of the little patient's health condition. What tests are we talking about?
  • Complete blood count
  • Biernacki reaction (ESR)
  • Iron level
  • Antistreptolysin reaction (ASO)
  • C-reactive protein (CRP)
  • General urine test.

What blood tests after 30

Both women and men after the age of 30 don't need to worry about too long a list of tests. This doesn't change the fact, however, that the basic blood tests listed below should be performed regularly. Very often, additional tests are also recommended for women accompanied by serious hormonal changes, which may favor the development of cervical or breast cancer (especially if someone in the close family has already had cancer). What blood tests should you remember after the age of 30?
  • Complete blood and urine count
  • ESR
  • Lipid profile
  • Liver function tests
  • Blood glucose level
  • Hormone monitoring
  • Tumor markers.

What blood tests after 40

Over the years, the list of blood tests to be performed gets longer. This is because thyroid problems may begin to appear during this period. Therefore, in addition to the tests recommended for people over 30, you should also check:
  • Thyroid hormones
  • Creatinine level
  • Total cholesterol concentration or lipid profile
  • Uric acid in the blood.

What preventive blood tests 50+ and 60+

After reaching the age of 50, the list of basic tests adds – in the case of men – PSA (screening test allowing detection of inflammatory conditions and prostate cancer).
