COVID-19 Vaccination
Every person planning to undergo Sars-Cov-2 vaccination undergoes a so-called preliminary medical qualification. This is a process similar to all other vaccinations, such as flu shots. The examining physician checks whether the patient is healthy and whether there are contraindications for vaccination – vaccines are not administered to a sick patient with high fever and other acute disease symptoms. In this case, vaccination should be postponed until symptoms subside. The primary contraindication for coronavirus vaccination is anaphylactic reaction, as well as severe allergic reactions to the active substance or any other component of the vaccine. Importantly, if anaphylactic shock occurs after receiving the first dose of the vaccine, the second dose should not be administered. A severe allergic reaction can occur with any vaccine. However, it's worth knowing that it occurs extremely rarely and should not be feared. The presence of mild infection or slightly elevated temperature (within normal range), should not constitute a contraindication for vaccination. The situation is somewhat different with chronic diseases. What chronic diseases exclude COVID-19 vaccination?
Importantly, the safety and efficacy of coronavirus vaccines has been confirmed – including among people with chronic diseases – although the final list of chronic diseases that are not a contraindication for vaccination is still being updated. If an exacerbation of a chronic disease is observed before COVID-19 vaccination, this should be reported to the doctor. The Ministry of Health recommends that in case of worsening disease symptoms, vaccination should be postponed. Patients with so-called comorbidities should contact their doctor with a request for an electronic vaccination referral. They are in the risk group and are eligible for priority vaccination. These include diseases such as:- lung diseases
- diabetes
- bronchial asthma
- anemia
- chronic kidney disease.
Other Contraindications for COVID-19 Vaccination
A contraindication for vaccination is primarily pregnancy. Women interested in COVID-19 vaccination should remember this. According to the recommendations of Advisory Committees on Immunization in Great Britain, Canada and the United States, contraindications for COVID-19 vaccination also include pregnancy and breastfeeding. No studies have been conducted on such patient groups. Postponement of COVID-19 vaccination is required for people who are struggling with an acute infectious disease on the day of vaccination. Special caution should also be exercised by people taking anticoagulant medications.Comirnaty and Previously Administered Vaccines
Importantly, there's no need to worry about combining the coronavirus vaccine with vaccines we've received previously. In the case of both the mandatory tuberculosis vaccine and the recently popular flu vaccine, after administering the COVID-19 vaccine no side effects should occur. It should be remembered that mild deterioration of the patient's condition (e.g., severe headache, muscle pain) or arm pain is a natural reaction of the human body, as every vaccine stimulates the immune system to action.Possible Side Effects After Vaccination
The occurrence of side effects after vaccination doesn't always happen. Everything depends on the patient's body. The most common side effects occurring after vaccination are:- headache
- general fatigue and confusion
- muscle and joint weakness
- chills
- elevated temperature
- vomiting
- redness, pain, swelling in the area of the vaccination wound.
