Drug detox in Gorzów Wielkopolski is symptomatic treatment of withdrawal given intravenously at our practice on Traugutta 6. A phone assessment, vital signs, an infusion over 3, 6 or 12 hours, discharge home the same day. The point is a night of sleep, corrected hydration and electrolytes, and anxiety and irritability brought down during the first days without the substance.
What the infusion does not do, despite what adverts promise
A drip does not speed up the removal of a substance from the body. The pace is set by the clearance and half-life of the compound, that is by the substance itself and by how the liver and kidneys work, not by what hangs in the bag. What local surveys say about drug use in Gorzów
The city commissioned its own study instead of quoting national statistics. The survey from June 2022, carried out for Gorzów by an external research centre, covered 2021 people in total, including 977 pupils from local schools. In the same document 28 families received support because of drug problems, against 221 because of alcohol, and among perpetrators of domestic violence a drug problem was recorded in 33 cases against 147 with an alcohol problem. That gap does not mean there are few drugs in Gorzów. It means they reach the statistics later, because families come forward late or not at all.
Why the substance decides whether an infusion makes sense
Withdrawal runs differently in every class of substance, and it is that difference, rather than the patient's condition, that determines where treatment belongs.
- Stimulants (mephedrone, amphetamine, cocaine): no established pharmacotherapy for withdrawal exists. In practice we give hydration, sleep and symptomatic treatment. That is the weakest claim in our offer and we say so plainly.
- Benzodiazepines: they are often taken to come down off a stimulant, and the patient does not then think of themselves as dependent on them. Yet their withdrawal only begins after two to seven days and calls for weeks of tapering, which one infusion cannot replace.
- GHB and GBL: the course can be as severe as alcohol withdrawal and responds poorly to standard treatment. A hospital ward is the place for it.
- Cannabis: people come mainly with insomnia and irritability lasting through the first two weeks. An infusion does not shorten that period.
- Designer drugs: we ask for the brand name and the place of purchase, because a different compound is sold under one name every few months.

The length of the infusion follows the condition on admission, not the patient's choice. Three hours is enough after a short binge, when dehydration and exhaustion dominate. Six hours comes in with vomiting, palpitations or severe agitation. Twelve hours applies to people after several days of continuous use, where rehydration and observation have to be spread out.
An infusion after a stimulant crash
The most common reason for a call in Gorzów is the crash after mephedrone or amphetamine: dozens of hours without sleep, then exhaustion, low mood, irritability and thirst. When an infusion is enough and when a hospital ward is needed
An outpatient infusion makes sense when withdrawal is severe but not life threatening, and the patient returns afterwards to the care of a sober person. One day can be enough to break the binge and sleep through the night.
A ward is needed when observation around the clock becomes necessary, or a taper spread over weeks, or treatment of several dependencies at once. What we check before detox in Gorzów and what rules it out
The assessment call takes about fifteen minutes and ends with one of three answers: an appointment, a referral to a hospital ward, or a request to contact the treating physician first. Why we do not detox from heroin and other opioids
This refusal surprises people most, because opioids are exactly what they ask about. Withdrawal itself rarely kills; what kills is what arrives a week later. A few days without an opioid lower tolerance, and returning to the previous dose after such a break can kill. In the first weeks after opioid detox the risk of fatal overdose rises several times over, in the order of three to eight times according to Strang (BMJ 2003, PMID 12727768) and Merrall (Addiction 2010, PMID 20579009), with the first two weeks the most dangerous.

Counterfeit tablets and naloxone at home
We ask about this with everyone who mentions tablets bought through messaging apps. Such a tablet can be indistinguishable from a pharmacy one, and it sometimes contains nitazenes, opioids often stronger than fentanyl. The buyer is then convinced they know the dose when they do not. Naloxone spray, available in Poland on prescription, makes more sense in such a home than another attempt to quit unaided.
Situations that call for an emergency department rather than our practice
Families usually call when someone has not slept for days and starts behaving out of character. The list below marks the line beyond which an infusion is the wrong answer and hospital is the only right one.
- Seizures, including a single brief one.
- Confusion, delirium, talking to people who are not there.
- A persistent high temperature together with muscle rigidity.
- Chest pain or a fast, irregular heartbeat.
- No response to touch or voice, shallow or rasping breathing.
- Thoughts of taking one's own life said out loud.
One more condition belongs on that list. If alcohol appeared regularly alongside the drug, an outpatient infusion is out regardless of how mild today's state looks. Two withdrawals then run in parallel, and the worst moment usually arrives later than anyone expects.
What goes into the detox infusion
There is no ready made set. The composition is chosen by medical staff after an examination, depending on the length of the binge, the dominant symptoms and the readings on admission.
- Rehydrating fluids as the base of the infusion.
- Electrolytes topped up against test results rather than in advance: potassium falls mainly after vomiting, magnesium after several days without sleep or food.
- Glucose, if the patient has not eaten for a long time.
- B group vitamins, thiamine included.
- Treatment of whatever is currently making life impossible: vomiting, insomnia running into a third day, or anxiety building from early morning.
There is no antidote in the bag, because none exists for mephedrone or amphetamine. Nor is this a wellness vitamin set, despite the similar appearance. Confusing the two ends in expecting an effect that a detox infusion does not deliver.
