Esperal Alcohol Implant Opole – Procedure Characteristics
Esperal alcohol implant is subcutaneous implant containing disulfiram – active substance used in alcohol addiction treatment. Preparation in tablet form is implanted under skin during short surgical procedure. After implantation, disulfiram gradually releases into body, maintaining constant medication blood concentration.
Implant doesn't cure addiction itself – it serves as abstinence supporting tool. Acts as so-called "chemical barrier" that makes alcohol consumption trigger very unpleasant physical symptoms. This awareness helps addicted people refrain from reaching for alcohol in difficult moments.
Alcohol Implant in Opole
At Nasz Gabinet at Torowa 16 in Opole, we perform Esperal implantations since 2015. We serve patients from entire Opole Voivodeship and surroundings. Convenient location ensures easy access by public transport and car.
Disulfiram Mechanism of Action – Acetaldehyde Blockage
Disulfiram contained in Esperal implant blocks enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, which is responsible for acetaldehyde breakdown – toxic product of ethyl alcohol transformation. Under normal conditions, acetaldehyde is quickly converted to harmless acetic acid. When enzyme is blocked, aldehyde accumulates in body, triggering unpleasant symptoms.
Alcohol reaction after implant includes:
- intense face and neck flushing,
- rapid heartbeat and blood pressure drop,
- severe nausea and vomiting,
- dizziness and headache,
- shortness of breath and anxiety feeling.
Symptoms appear within minutes after drinking even small alcohol amount and can last several hours. Reaction is proportional to consumed alcohol amount – more means stronger symptoms.
Esperal Opole – Alcohol Implant Effectiveness
Esperal implant effectiveness depends on several factors. Procedure itself is not treatment – it's tool that works best combined with proper patient motivation and therapeutic support.
What determines effectiveness:
- patient motivation – implant works best for people who consciously want to stop drinking,
- environment support – family and loved ones can significantly influence abstinence maintenance,
- parallel psychotherapy – working on addiction causes increases chances for lasting sobriety,
- lifestyle change – avoiding situations and people related to drinking.
Implant creates psychological barrier – awareness that drinking alcohol will trigger immediate, unpleasant symptoms helps restrain impulsive alcohol reaching. This gives time for working through deeper therapy problems. Patients combining implant with psychotherapy achieve significantly better results than those relying solely on pharmacology.
Alcohol Implant Indications – Qualification Criteria
Esperal implant is intended for people who:
- consciously want to maintain abstinence and seek additional support,
- completed alcohol withdrawal stage (detox) or are in sobriety state,
- understand medication action principles and accept related limitations,
- want to protect themselves against impulsive alcohol reaching.
Procedure is particularly helpful for people who repeatedly tried maintaining abstinence but experienced relapses. Implant gives time for working on addiction causes through therapy, protecting against drinking return. In our Opole clinic, before procedure we conduct qualification interview to ensure patient is appropriately motivated and understands treatment essence.
Contraindications for Esperal Implantation
Not every patient can undergo Esperal implantation procedure. Absolute contraindications include:
- severe liver failure and cirrhosis,
- kidney failure,
- heart diseases (failure, ischemic disease, hypertension),
- pregnancy and breastfeeding period,
- disulfiram hypersensitivity,
- psychoses and suicide attempts in history.
Relative contraindications require individual doctor assessment: diabetes, epilepsy (disulfiram lowers seizure threshold), hypothyroidism, skin diseases at planned implantation site. Before procedure at Our Opole Clinic, doctor conducts medical interview and in case of doubts may recommend additional tests. Patient safety is our priority.
Implant Procedure Preparation in Opole
Proper procedure preparation is crucial for its safety. Basic requirements:
- minimum 24-48 hours abstinence before procedure (body must be completely alcohol-free),
- list of all taken medications (some may interact with disulfiram),
- identity document,
- light meal 2-3 hours before visit.
If you have difficulty maintaining abstinence, consider earlier alcohol detox – we offer packages combining detox with implant at attractive price. For visit, wear comfortable, loose clothing – we perform procedure in buttock area. After procedure, you can independently return home, but we recommend being accompanied by close person.
Implantation Procedure Course in Opole
Esperal implantation procedure at Our Opole Clinic lasts about 30 minutes and proceeds as follows:
- Initial consultation – doctor discusses procedure course with patient, answers questions and verifies no contraindications.
- Operating field preparation – skin disinfection at implantation site (buttock area).
- Local anesthesia – anesthetic administration, so patient feels no pain.
- Implantation – making small incision and placing implant under skin.
- Wound closure – applying sutures and sterile dressing.
After procedure, patient remains under observation for about 15-20 minutes. Receives wound care instructions and recovery period recommendations. Same day can return home.
Implant Procedure Painlessness – Local Anesthesia
Alcohol implant implantation procedure is practically painless thanks to local anesthesia use. Patient may feel only slight prick during anesthetic administration – similar to injection. Implant implantation itself occurs with complete area anesthesia, so causes no pain.
After anesthesia wears off (1-2 hours after procedure), slight discomfort may appear at incision site – comparable to feeling after minor cut. Pain is mild and usually doesn't require strong painkillers. Over-the-counter paracetamol medications sufficient. Discomfort completely subsides within 2-3 days. Most our Opole patients describe procedure as significantly less burdensome than expected.
Post-Procedure Recommendations – Wound Care
Proper post-procedure site care accelerates healing and minimizes complication risk. Recommendations for first days:
- keep dressing dry for first 24-48 hours,
- avoid soaking wound – shower instead of bath,
- don't touch procedure site with dirty hands,
- wear loose, cotton clothing that won't compress wound,
- avoid intense physical exertion for 5-7 days.
Change dressing according to doctor's instructions – usually every 1-2 days, using sterile gauze and disinfectant. Sutures removed after 7-10 days – you can do this at Our Opole Clinic. If you notice concerning symptoms (intensifying pain, redness, wound discharge, fever), contact us immediately.

Disulfiram Reaction – Alcohol Consumption Effects with Implant
Alcohol consumption during Esperal implant action triggers disulfiram reaction – severe, unpleasant symptoms appearing within minutes. Reaction severity depends on consumed alcohol amount:
With small amounts (e.g., beer sip, wine glass): facial flushing, rapid heartbeat, mild nausea, headache.
With larger amounts: severe vomiting, sudden blood pressure drop, shortness of breath, panic feeling, heart rhythm disturbances. In extreme cases, may lead to life-threatening condition requiring medical intervention.
Reaction is not "punishment" – it's protective mechanism meant to discourage drinking. Symptoms subside spontaneously within hours when alcohol is eliminated from body. However, conscious drinking with implant is dangerous.
Prohibited Products with Alcohol Implant
Disulfiram reacts with alcohol regardless of origin source. Products requiring caution:
- food: dishes with alcohol addition (wine sauces, tiramisu, fondue), alcohol-filled chocolates, liqueur desserts, wine vinegar,
- beverages: non-alcoholic beer (contains trace alcohol amounts), some energy drinks, fermented beverages (kombucha, kefir),
- medications: alcohol-based expectorant syrups, some drops, alcohol mouthwashes,
Before using new product check composition – avoid those containing "alcohol", "ethanol" or "alcohol". In case of doubts contact us. Most everyday products are safe – it's about consciously avoiding those with alcohol as ingredient.
Implant as Comprehensive Alcoholism Treatment Element
Esperal implant is effective tool, but doesn't treat addiction causes. Alcoholism is multidimensional disease – includes not only physical alcohol craving, but also thinking patterns, stress coping mechanisms and social habits. Without working on these aspects, drinking return risk after implant action ends is high.
Therefore at Our Opole Clinic we recommend combining implant with addiction psychotherapy. Therapy helps:
- understand own addiction mechanisms,
- develop new ways of coping with difficult emotions,
- rebuild relationships with loved ones,
- create sobriety life plan.
Implant gives time and safety needed for this work. Patients combining both approaches achieve significantly better long-term results.
Alcohol Detox Opole Before Implant – Indications
Detox is necessary when patient cannot independently maintain abstinence for required 24-48 hours before procedure. Applies particularly to people:
- drinking daily or in alcohol binges,
- experiencing withdrawal symptoms (hand tremors, sweating, anxiety),
- with history of seizures or alcohol delirium.
At Our Clinic we offer alcohol detox that safely guides patient through withdrawal period. After detox, when body is alcohol-free, implant implantation procedure can be immediately performed. We offer combined packages:
- 6h Detox + Implant: 1899 PLN
- 12h Detox + VIP Implant: 2499 PLN
This solution allows starting treatment same day, without need for independent alcohol withdrawal at home.

Anti-Alcohol Injection Opole – Actual State
In Poland anti-alcohol injection doesn't exist. Only available pharmacological implantation method is Disulfiram WZF (implantation tablets) – only registered preparation of this type on Polish market.
"Anti-alcohol injections" or "alcohol-blocking injections" offers found online have no medical basis. No such preparation has been approved for circulation by Office for Registration of Medicinal Products.
We use exclusively registered Disulfiram WZF preparation in implantation tablet form. This is only proven and safe pharmacological abstinence support method available in Poland.
Alcohol Implant with Home Visit Opole – Why Only at Clinic
Performing alcohol implant with patient home visit is strongly discouraged. Procedure requires:
- sterile conditions – Disulfiram WZF tablets must remain sterile,
- skin and subcutaneous tissue incision,
- properly prepared medical rooms,
- proper lighting and position during procedure,
- access to medical equipment in case of complications.
Conducting procedure in home conditions significantly increases complication and infection risk. Preparation itself is sterile and properly packaged – performing procedure outside clinic destroys these conditions.
Alcohol Implant Removal Opole – Procedure
Alcohol implant removal is possible, though technically difficult:
- implant grows into tissue and is placed deep under muscle fascia,
- procedure must be performed by surgeon,
- only implants performed at given facility removed – we have medical documentation allowing implant location,
- if needed, we perform ultrasound examination for precise position determination.
Implant removal doesn't guarantee immediate medication action cessation – disulfiram during implantation period partially absorbed into body. Patient should maintain caution for following weeks.
At Nasz Gabinet Opole, we remove only implants implanted at our facility. Before removal decision, we recommend consultation – sudden desire to remove implant often signals problem requiring therapy work-through.
